“I declare before you all that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service”.
It’s the Jubilee weekend here in Britain, celebrating 60 years of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign.
The above pledge was given by the Queen on her 21st birthday back in 1947. It’s a reminder that those years have been, for better or worse, dedicated to one sole purpose.
This isn’t a point about royalty, it’s a point about the work you do.
When you’re a monarch, you don’t get much choice in your job role. Your future (and past) are there for all to see.
You, on the other hand, get to choose. You get to follow your passions, to do work that matters to you. No, you may not have the chance to declare your commitment to an entire Commonwealth – but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t make the pledge to yourself, at least.
So, to what are going to devote your life’s service?
